About
My lifetime journey is exploring and interpreting nature's mood and nuance. Initially I paint in a vigorous manner to capture the emotional essence of a landscape. As the painting evolves, I concentrate on developing the intricacy of value and light. My work is noted for strength in composition, color and mood.
My classical training includes the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, University of the Arts and essential continued studies . My current medium of choice is pastel because it is powerful and direct. Unlike oils and watercolors, pastels cannot be casually mixed on a palette. All the pigments are applied and mixed directly on paper. It is a very intimate medium where nothing comes between artist and creation – thought is action!
A great deal of skill, decisiveness and nerve are required to work in pastel. Many times when I paint, I feel it's like riding a roller coaster. I experience the initial tension of beginning the painting, the dizzying highs and lows encountered while working out problems, and finally the exhilaration of finishing the piece!
